Destined to be a Mathematical Genius

I have a cousin who celebrates Pie day every year. He has celebrated this holiday for as long as I can remember. I myself have partaken in this wonderful holiday for the past few years and have enjoyed eating the pie that is eaten in the commemoration of Pie day.

Being born on Pie day is very special in itself, but consider that Kamryn was born on March (3) 14 at 1:30 (1.5 hours) in the 9th year of this century.

Thus I give you the Princess of Pie day (at least for the next 5 years when she may be replaced by the baby born at 9:26 on 3/14/15).

If there are any of you who don't yet think I'm a nerd, or don't know why I'm a nerd Pi=3.1415926...

The waiting continues

10:45 - Jake goes downstairs to see if there is anything to eat in the physician lounge. There isn't.

11:00 - Jake returns to find Melissa still pregnant.

11:15 - The contractions have spaced out to every 6 minutes and Jake gets bored.

11:20 - Melissa is frustrated as it appears this baby isn't coming on the 13th (Charlotte let out a groan).

Epidural

9:45 - Anesthesiologist arrives

9:55 - Anesthesiologist makes second attempt at epidural

10:00 - Epidural is in, Melissa stops feeling pain

10:10 - OB arrives and asks me if I took Melissa out drinking prior to arriving at hospital (Melissa tends to get loopy the closer she gets to delivery).

10:15 - Melissa's water breaks. OB reports to Jake that there is some meconium in the fluid.

10:16 - Jake freaks out because there's meconium in the fluid.

10:17 - Jake calms down.

10:20 - OB asks Jake how involved he wants to be in the delivery. Jake responds by saying he wants to be a visitor to the hospital today and stay above the mason dixon line for this delivery.

10:25 - OB informs Melissa that she doesn't think she'll make it to midnight (far away in Utah Charlotte rejoices).

10:30 - We're back to waiting.

We're at the Hospital

Melissa started having contractions at 6 pm this evening. At the time we were out doing errands and the contractions stayed steady and increased in intensity (or so she tells me).

6:45 - Melissa called one of the at least 7 people who have offered to watch our kids and informed them that we might be heading into the hospital.

6:46 - Melissa decides to take a shower before going into the hospital

7:30 - Jake tells Melissa if she doesn't hurry up with her hair curling she may not have enough time to get the mandatory 500 cc of IV fluids for her epidural (gotta please the anesthesia docs).

7:45 - Kids get dropped off at the Wells, a giant thanks to you and to everyone else who would have eagerly watched our kids as well. Spender doesn't even say goodbye as he runs into the house.

8:00 - Jake gets a sinking feeling as we drive up to the hospital and he realizes he will be spending the night in that prison.

8:01 - Jake rejoices as he realizes that he has no patient responsibility during this night in the prison.

8:15 - Melissa is checked and a fellow resident (she's had resident's at every other delivery so why not this one) tells me she is 5 1/2 cm 70% effaced.

9:00 - We get moved across the hall to a nicer room.

9:15 - Fluids are going, epidural is ordered, OB notified plan to break water when epidural is in.

Stay tuned for future updates.

Church Statement

No doubt many of you have heard about the upcoming episode of Big Love set to air on the 15th of March. There has been a lot of stuff circling around the internet concerning what to do about this situation. Just yesterday I think I joined a group on facebook encouraging HBO not to air the episode. Before I got too worked up about the whole deal I went to the church website to see if there was an official statement on the situation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I encourage anyone concerned about this issue to take the time to read the official statement found here.

I'm Packed!!

Finally, at 38 1/2 weeks, I have my hospital bag packed. I am hoping this will let my brain tell my body that I am now ready to go into labor. I have gone a few days early with each of my previous deliveries and hope that trend continues. I try to stay positive and take advantage of the time I have before the baby gets here but mostly I am just looking forward to not being pregnant any more.

So beyond waiting for the baby to come there hasn't been a whole lot of other things going on around here. The kids are super excited for Grandma Powell to come on Saturday. They are counting down the "sleeps" until she is here. And I am super excited to get to see my mom again and have her here for two weeks.

Oh, and Jacob and I discovered a new favorite game. We went to a good friends house last Friday for a game night and had an absolute blast. We played several new games and absolutely loved playing Pirates Cove. It is a great game and once you learn the rules (The instruction guide is like a novel) it is a blast to play. Thanks again Becca and Clint for having us over and we are ready for a repeat whenever you are. (This time we promise not to stay until 3 am)

Well that's about it. Not to exciting I know but hopefully we will have some great news and lots of pictures to post in the near future. I know you are all dying to know if it will be baby boy Corry or baby girl Corry. Stay tuned to find out.

An update of sorts

Melissa and I went to see Twilight at the cheap theater yesterday. Now I know I may receive some hate mail for this but that movie was awful. I didn't go into the movie with high expectations, but I do enjoy an occasional chick flick. Stories that make Melissa all twitterpated aren't completely lost on me. There were hints of a good story in this movie, but those hints were swallowed up in poor acting, poor script writing and the worst soundtrack I have ever heard. Generally the music in a film adds to the story, but with twilight the music actually distracted me from the movie it was so bad. Even the special effects were poor. Seeing Edward run up the mountain with Bella on his back made me think of Scooby Doo with his legs a blur and a trail of dust behind him. You might think I would feel vindicated by this as I have not been a huge fan of the vampire love story, but I was actually very dissappointed and I feel even worse for Melissa who was looking forward to this movie so much.

In other news I am happy to be doing surgery this month. I'm not actually doing any surgery or even seeing any surgery as the group I'm with no longer practices at our hospital and I don't have priveledges at their hospital. I spend a lot of time in the office doing preop and postop visits. I feel really confident with those things a FP would learn in the surgery suite as a result of a very good surgery month during medical school so I don't mind spending more time in the office. The fact that I don't have to worry too much about being available when Melissa goes into labor isn't too bad either.

As you can see from the sidebar we're down to 15 days before the baby arrives. We have all but settled on a name. It has been a little difficult coming up with a name for this baby as we don't yet know the sex, though I'm betting or just hoping for a girl, but I think I've successfully converted Melissa into a fan of Kameron, Cameron or Kamryn depending on the sex. That's right folks we have once again gone the with a unisex name to match the likes of Jessi and Kris. It should be noted that Spencer absolutely abhors this name, but my older sister hated the name of my youngest brother so there is some tradition there. We are still wavering on the middle name so if you have any suggestions feel free. I appologize to my mother who will no doubt feel overwhelmed if this baby happens to be a girl leaving her with granddaughters Kaylee, Kamry, Kirstin, Kendee, and now Kamryn. At least she will be able to easily remember Marian, Makell, Jessica, Jane, Eliza and Heather.

This stage of pregnancy is the hardest for me and it has gotten harder with each successive child (I have had such a difficult time getting rid of my baby weight since Kristian was born). Melissa waddles around in pain most of the time. She sleeps poorly, and has a very difficult time finding a comfortable position in which to stand, sit or lay. She hides it well and it really doesn't slow her down any which amazes me.

I finally got an Indiana driver's license yesterday. I had to take the written test, and the lady congratulated me on how well I did. If only the boards would go so well. I'm not sure if this is a nationwide thing, but in Indiana you are no longer allowed to smile in your driver's license picture. My scowl combined with my unkempt hair contributed to the worst picture ever. I don't expect any officer will let me off with a warning as long as that picture is on my license. Just another reason to look forward to moving back home in 28 months. Even Melissa told me the picture looks horrible.

I think that's enough rambling for now. Enjoy your Wednesday.
