Week one of the 2009 college football season was a good one for me, and here is what I learned:
1. Boise State will once again be undefeated at the end of the season and once again will be shut out of the BCS.
2. Utah could be great this year, but their win against the Aggies proved about as much as Florida's win against that peewee team they played. The Utes made a lot of mistakes that they certainly won't be able to overcome in games against TCU, BYU and Oregon, but if they can find a way to win, as they did so often last year, they may find themselves playing for something bigger this year.
3. Notre Dame looks good and Weiss may be sticking around, but it is too early to tell for sure. Nevada plays in the same conference as Utah State and both are whipping boys for BSU. In reality the Irish should be favored to win all but one of their games this year and when they play that game against the Trojans we'll know whether or not they're for real.
4. BYU is a lot better than the media is giving them credit for. Oklahoma lost a lot up front and their receiving corps has been downgraded from last year, but their running game did next to nothing against the Cougars. Bradford played most of the first half and if not for the Cougars mistakes leading to Sooner scores this game would not have been so close. BYU was the better team last night. If the big three in the MWC can get through the season with only losses to each other it is conceivable that one of the three if undefeated may actually get a shot at the national title. Heck if Oklahoma deserves a shot for running the table from here on out then the team that beat them certainly merits some mention in the conversation if they are undefeated at year end. Unfortunately for Boise State the BCS will not be inviting two outsiders to their dance this year or any year in the forseable future.
5. Ohio State is a joke again. Here's hoping they lose a game or two so we don't have to watch them get embarrassed again in January. Oh yeah, the embarrassment comes next week with USC.

Sawdust Special
This morning before Spencer left for school he told me his tummy hurt. This is about an everyday occasion for Spencer so I told him he would be fine and to eat his breakfast. After breakfast he told me he was cold from drinking his milk. Once again, an every day occurrence, so I told him to put on his jacket. He left for school and we began to get ready for the day here at home. At 8:45 the school nurse called to tell us Spencer had thrown up in school and needed to be picked up.
When I asked him what happened he said "My stomach started to hurt and then I threw up on my desk, then I threw up in my class, then I threw up in the hall, and then I threw up in the toilet." Oh yes, it is a sawdust special day at Darden in the first grade hall.

What a Man, What a Man, What a Man, What a Mighty Good Man!
Need I say more. Probably not, but when has that ever stopped me. Jacob installed these new floors this last week. He started the project Tuesday evening and finished Saturday afternoon. He would get home from work, change clothes, and go right to work on the floors until the kids bedtime. He was so focused on finishing as fast as he could so that I wouldn't have to have the kitchen torn apart for long. Yes I know, he is amazing. I love, love, love theses floors!!! They make me so happy. They lighten up the kitchen, open up the hallway, and reflect the natural light in the house beautifully. So far, I think this is my favorite remodel project results. Thanks sweetheart.

Tidbits
I have had bits and pieces of things that I have wanted to post with cute pictures and such but it just isn't happening. So here are the ramblings and reminders in my head, in an all business format.
I turned 30 on the 16th of this month. Jacob made a wonderful Salmon dinner and then he and the kids gave me some wonderful gifts. He put the candles in the brownies a bit to soon and so the brownies had cute waxy color holes all over. The kids and I thought that was pretty cool. Two days before my birthday Jacob threw a great party with lots of our friends. He ended up having to do nursing home rounds up until about 30 minutes before the party started so I also got to learn how to cook a dutch oven dinner. Yes, you would think this is something I already knew how to do, but, observing constantly doesn't equal doing. 30's not so bad. I have a lot to be grateful over my 30 years, I just keep trying to focus on that and remind myself that 30 is the new 20.
Jacob is having a busy non-call month. He was really looking forward to getting back and sleeping in a bit. That's what we get for thinking. Since we have been back he has only had one or two days that he hasn't had a patient in the hospital. No sleeping in when you have to check on your patients before rounds. Maybe next month :)
Spencer started first grade. The first day of school went over a lot better than the first day of Kindergarten and I am proud to say there were not tears, from anyone. Although, by the end of the first day I sure was having a hard time waiting for him to finally get home. He has had no problems with the new length of school and is pretty much loving everything about first grade. He absolutely loves lunch and recess time and told me that PE is the greatest subject ever. He also really likes art and music. The art doesn't surprise us at all but for a kid who still can't sing I am a Child of God, the music enjoyment pretty much floored us. He is doing great in his class subjects and the reading is really starting to come along. I can't begin to explain what a relief that is. He really is doing great and working hard. We are pretty proud of that little guy.
Jessi is loving being the oldest at home however the newness of it all is starting to wear off. She was mommies little helper for the whole first week of school. Now when I ask for mommies little helper she asks why she has to do everything. She does it, just with a little more murmuring than before.
I keep thinking I need to start potty training Kristian. I am pretty sure he is ready and I am just putting it off because Jessi broke me when it comes to potty training. That's right, I am blaming it on her. So now that I have typed it I need you all to start asking me how it is going so that I actually do it. I am so tired of buying 3 boxes of diapers at a time.
Kami has learned to roll from her back to her stomach. She has not learned to roll from her stomach to her back. She gets tired of being on her stomach rather quickly. It has made for some interesting two weeks of her and me being frustrated with each other. She just can't seem to understand why I don't want to roll her back over every 5 minutes. Hopefully she will finish the skill of rolling back pretty soon.
We have done a few more home projects lately. I stripped the old caulk from the master tub and re caulked it. This was a nasty, dirty job but the difference is night and day. I really should have gotten to that sooner. Jacob has started to lay wood floors in the main floor hallways and kitchen. I am so excited that we ( and by we I mean he) are getting to this project. The floors were pretty much one of the top things I didn't like and wanted to update. It has been worth the wait. I will post pictures when the project is complete. I am starting to look for paint colors for the basement and hope to get going on the last three rooms in the next little bit. The thought of having every room painted is a great one. To bad the mere thought of it won't get it painted.
So that's my mind. Now I can free up some space up there. All caught up, without much stress. Works for me :)

Regrets, College Football, and the ABC's
How's that for a title to let you know who's writing this post?
I've been doing a lot of thinking about regret lately. Residency has been somewhat difficult for me since we got back into town and I can't really put my finger on why that is. I have my theories, of course, but they are just that, theories, nothing that rings true. Back to the topic of regret I've been thinking about some of the big decisions of my life. Some of those decisions have resulted in my mission, my spouse, my 4 children, my education, my career, my life. During the two years while I was on my mission I had some down times, but I never questioned if I would do it again if given the choice. Never once have I thought I would make any changes to my choice of wife and when to have children (its a good thing to because Melissa would have my head if I said otherwise).
In the course of the past year I have asked myself many times if I would go into medicine if I had it all to do over again. In the end medicine will still give me all that I've ever wanted. Melissa is free to stay home with the kids now and in the future. I can work a schedule that allows me to be present for my children's lives. I get to move home in less than two years and spend the rest of my days living in Cedar City (that's like a death sentence to some, but I'm pretty sure they just haven't seen the light). So would I do it again if given the chance? You bet I would, in a heartbeat. There was also a time not so long ago that I enjoyed medicine for all it's glory. Being an intern wore me down, as I think it does for many others. Treating my patient panel wears me down, and will continue to do so. Feeling inadequate is excruciating for me, but when I'm honest with myself I believe things will get better. There will come a day when I enjoy going to work and maybe I'll feel like I'm making a difference. Just don't ask me if I think Spencer should be a doctor...not yet anyway.
Now for the important stuff. A couple of days ago Lou Holtz predicted that Notre Dame would play Florida in the BCS championship game this year. Granted Lou Holtz is an idiot, but that really steams me. Lou admits that he doesn't believe that Notre Dame will be the second best team in the nation, but he believes the Irish will be the best team on the field each Saturday with the possible exception of the USC game and an undefeated or one-loss Irish team will certainly be slotted to play for the BCS championship. You've got to be kidding me! There was this one team last year that was the best team each week. That team played a much harder schedule than the one facing the Irish this year. That team didn't get a shot at the BCS championship. That team is still the only undefeated team from the 2008 college football season. I would love it if ND goes to a BCS bowl this year, because that other team comes to South Bend November 13, 2010 and I'm going to be sporting all my red in the visitors section.
Last of all I've seen another blog tag that I have to take part in.
