What I Want

I tend to spend a lot of time thinking about the future.  I'm not sure how much normal people think about the future, but I tend to think that I am on the far end of that bell curve.  I'm not sure if I'm hardwired to do so or if I have adapted my joy of looking ahead, but I do enjoy it.  The future is full of roses (or at least a truck with a rose bush in the bed) and I like to think about where I'll be in 5, 10, or 20 years so I can start making plans.

At times I have longed for the tomorrows of my life because today felt so hard.  I still get that way from time to time, but the majority of the time now I just enjoy thinking about tomorrow because it keeps changing and I like change.  I'm a little nervous to actually finish residency and move next year, not because it's new and different, rather, that move represents the last big move/change in our lives.  I'm not entirely sure how I'll handle that.  I keep teasing Melissa that I may have to go to law school in a few years just so we can continue our nomadic life.  It should be noted that she does not like that line of thought one bit.

Back to the future (I love that trilogy by the way).  There are some things that I want out of my future.  Fifteen years ago I wanted to have a Ferrari in my future.  Ten years ago I could see myself living in a giant house up on the hill with an indoor gym outback and a pool in the basement.  Five years ago I wanted a cabin up in the mountains.  I still want the cabin.  I'm not so enamored with the other things anymore.  At this point I want to be able to say no to the Ferrari (or the like) when I have the means to purchase such a thing.  If that sounds arrogant you should probably get to know me better and avoid any rash judgements until you do so.  If you do know me really well and it still sounds arrogant I should probably find a better way to phrase that in the future.  I find that a lot of things sound arrogant on blogs that are not meant to be so.

So what do I want now?  I want to write a book.  I don't know what it will be about, but I enjoy writing so someday I'm going to write a book.  When I get finished maybe I'll tack it to the corkboard by the refrigerator and my grandkids will peruse it.  Maybe I'll keep writing stupid meaningless posts here for the next 10 years and count that.  I don't have any delusion of grandeur.  This isn't an armchair quarterback kind of stuff it's just something I want to do.

I want to learn to play the piano.  Someday I want to play a John Schmidt piece.  If I'm going to have a baby grand in my living room I have to be able to justify it and Melissa can't even read music (sorry Dear) so I can't very well tell people it was her decision to buy that monstrosity.

I want to do a triathlon.  Considering the fact that I swim like a rock I may satisfy this want by doing many triathlons as a member of a team with Melissa.  She can swim and I will do the other stuff.

I want to serve an LDS mission with my wife, preferrably in Brazil.

I want to be liked.  It's very chic to say that you don't care what anybody thinks.  I care.  I don't care what everybody thinks, but there are a lot of people who I respect and I want those people to like me.  I do care what those people think of my decisions.

Right now what I really want is for the lady in 23 to deliver her baby so that maybe I can get some sleep tonight.

Addendum: she delivered and I remembered what else I want.  I want Dreamworks to make more movies like How to Train Your Dragon.  We saw it on Saturday and it was awesome.  I have never enjoyed a cartoon so much.  Melissa, of course, cried and the kids had a blast.  Thank you Dreamworks.

Slightly Late Spider Web

So it took me a little longer to get this week's mini quilt done. I have never made a spider web block but it was fun to try a new technique. Will I make another one? Not sure at this point, maybe. However, I am very happy with the way it turned out. I think the set will just be adorable! So without further ado, her is mini quilt number 2 of 4.

Whose blog is this anyway?

This is an outrage!  I got bumped for a quilt?  This blog is about the Corry family and March Madness is an integral part of this family.  Just the other night Kristian hopped up on the bed to watch the final four with me.  After 20 seconds he asked: "Which one's Noder Dame, Dad?"  I don't see him saddling up next the the sewing machine.

Corrys love sports.  Watching sports leads to playing sports which teaches life lessons.  These things are important.

Unfortunately this blog seems to have been taken over by the etsyesque crowd and there's nothing I can do about except to kick against the pricks.  The readers have spoken and I am as a lame duck George W. Bush in a liberal America.  The only difference is I don't have a two term limit.  In that aspect I'm somewhat more like the Rush Limbaugh to your etsy views.

It's on now!

If you are reading this for the first time (this is certainly worthy of multiple visits) you should check out the next post.  Melissa does make some nice quilts and she could certaily have more expensive hobbies, but you didn't hear it from me.

My First Quilt-Along

Sew Mama Sew is focusing the entire month of April on Quilting. I am in Heaven. Part of the month is a quilt along with a new mini quilt tutorial each Monday. I have always wanted to make some mini quilts as well as participate in a quilt along so this was perfect.

The examples are all done in black and white with chartreuse mixed in. I loved this idea so I pulled out all of my black and white and then decided to add pink. There are 4 mini quilts in total. I think these will make an adorable wall hanging (maybe even strung from a clothes line) when they are done. This is the first project I have done in a long time with out specifically making it with someone in mind. Maybe it will turn out as a gift, maybe it will end up on my etsy shop, who knows.

Here is block one!! I am really happy with the way it turned out. Stay tuned for more mini quilts to come.

This is the front.

This is the back.

How Short Our Memory (sports not general conference)

Butler came so close last night and all I read about today is the condescension by the national news writers.  "What a movement for small schools and midmajors all around."  "Butler may have taken us to a new era of college basketball."  The Bulldogs brought excitement back to the NCAA tournament."  What a crock!

I was rooting for Butler like everybody else in the country, but this talk of changing landscapes is just ludicrous.  All year we've been hearing how this is a weak year in college basketball.  Had Duke lost yesterday it would have been 7 NCAA championship games for kryzwhateverhisnameis, and the one in 2010.  I'm not mocking Butler at all because I think they are every bit as good as all the teams they beat and some that they didn't beat.  I bet you didn't know that Butler has won 26 or more games in each of the last 4 seasons.  Entering the tournament this year Butler was 26-4 and had won their last 17 games.  They were playing as good or better than any team in the nation and they got a 5 seed.  A 5 seed! That means the powers that be had them as the 21st to 25th best team in the nation.

There will be no change in the national landscape.  The big money schools will stay the big money schools (thank you BCS).  Butler may crack the top 25 at the start of the season next year, but only after spending 5 years showing that it deserves to be there.  That's the way it is for college sports.  If you play in the big boy leagues they rank you based on the potential of the 7th graders that have committed to play for your school.  If you play in a midmajor conference you have to build a program for 4+ years and make the final four and even then you are still a cinderella team.

This will all be forgotten before the first ball hits the hardcourt next year.  If I remember correctly another midmajor school made it to the championship game in 1998.  One midmajor school actually won the championship in 1990 after having been in the final four 2 years previous to that and going back the following year.

One reporter even had the gall to ask Gordon Hayword in the postgame conference whether the glorious run to this point will outlive the pain of defeat, Hayward said no.

"For me [the strongest memory] is going to be the loss," Hayward said. "Hate losing."

Can you imagine that question being asked to any of the Duke players had the final shot dropped?

Maybe they should reseed the tournament now, just for fun.  I bet Butler gets a 4 seed, though Michigan State will move up to a 2 for sure.  At least this isn't football where the opinions of condescending press members actually matter.  Only a few more months and I can start bashing the BCS again.
